Trade Deal with Japan: Good News for Wine Exports

Posted 10/01/2019

As we continue to wait for the results of the WTO dispute settlement council and potential retaliatory tariffs on imports of EU wine, spirits, and beer, we at least can offer good news for exporters of wine to Japan.

The US and Japan have signed a limited trade deal that will reduce tariff barriers on many USA agriculture products, including wine. The final tariff schedule has not been published, but the expectation is that tariffs on bulk wine will be eliminated when the deal is finalized, and tariffs on bottled wine will be phased downward and eliminated by 2025.
