East Coast Congestion and West Coast Progress

Due to increased cargo surges, diverted container traffic from West Coast ports, and recent inclement weather, the East Coast is experiencing a sizeable backlog of shipments. The Port of New York and New Jersey is most affected, but the Port of Norfolk is also experiencing some delays and backlog. The increase in volume has led to more congestion and extended waiting periods for truckers. While all parties are doing their best to clear the congestion, it will take some time to overcome, and delays should be expected.

Port Workers Strike in Valparaiso

We recently received news that the port workers in Valparaiso, Chile, began a strike yesterday, March 16th. Initially the strike was supposed to last only 24 hours, but, as of now, it is scheduled to continue through today.

Terminal Shut Down at the Port of Oakland

The Port of Oakland’s largest container terminal was shut down Wednesday at noon due to an ILWU attempt to independently impose manning requirements that had failed to make it into the tentative agreement between the ILWU and PMA that was reached on February 20th.

Incident at the Port of Houston

On Monday, Barbours Cut Terminal at the Port of Houston was shut down due to a collision between two vessels which caused a leak of flammable liquid cargo. The volatile and colorless liquid, known as methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) is an additive used to raise the oxygen content of gasoline. It is difficult to determine how much liquid was actually spilled, but the leak was contained in 90 minutes.

Hours of Operation Updates for NY Ports

In light of the harsh winter weather hitting the East Coast, please see the following statement about the operating hours at the Port of NY/NJ :
“Please note that GCT Bayonne will keep it’s inbound gate open till 9pm next Monday (9th), Tuesday (10th), and Wednesday (11th). Cutoffs for double moves will be 9pm. Reefers will be 5pm.
On Thursday and Friday, the inbound gate will return to 6pm closure.
Double move cutoff will be 6pm. Reefers will be 5pm.”
For the Port of Newark:
“Saturday, March 7, 2015, PCNT will be open 7:00am to 3:00pm servicing all imports.
