As we mentioned last week in our global logistics update, please be aware that the USDA is conducting audits under the National Organic Program (NOP) to verify compliance and proper certification.
During these visits, agency officials are reviewing customer records to ensure that:
-
Products declared as NOP certified are accurately certified, with correct labels and valid certificates.
-
The suppliers issuing NOP certificates are referencing the correct certified importers or entities.
-
All NOP certifications are current and valid.
USDA has identified cases where suppliers issued NOP certificates, but the corresponding commodities were not declared as organic at import.
-
This is a major issue because it is considered non-compliant by their standards.
Required actions by the Importer:
-
The commercial invoice from the foreign producer must clearly state that the item is “ORGANIC.”
-
The NOP certificate must accompany the commercial documentation submitted for Customs declaration.
Attached is the latest USDA overview for your reference along with a sample of the NOP certificate. If you have any questions on these audits, please feel free to reach out to us.
