Albatrans Chile has provided the below important update:
We would like to provide the following update regarding the Mendoza–Chile border crossing.
Following a meeting held today by the Cristo Redentor System Committee, comprising the Chilean and Argentine Coordinations, and based on the safe transitability reports and favorable weather conditions reported by the road authorities of both countries, it has been decided that the Cristo Redentor System will reopen as of Tuesday, August 18, under the following conditions:
- Tuesday, August 18 through Thursday, August 20: only land freight transport from Argentina to Chile will be authorized, from 09:00 to 21:00 Argentina time (08:00 to 20:00 Chile time), up to Guardia Vieja. Beyond Guardia Vieja, traffic will operate normally in both directions.
Priority will be given to trucks that have already completed the documentation process and are currently at the ACI Uspallata parking facility.
- Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22: only land freight transport from Chile to Argentina will be authorized, from 09:00 to 21:00 Argentina time (08:00 to 20:00 Chile time), up to Uspallata. Beyond Uspallata, traffic will operate normally in both directions.
- Safety conditions remain a key priority. In coordination with the provincial authorities, and given the current circumstances, internal tourism traffic from Uspallata will remain suspended, as priority will be given to freight transportation.
- The conditions for reopening the crossing to tourism and other vehicles (passenger cars, buses, etc.), as well as the corresponding time windows to gradually normalize these activities, will be communicated in due course once safe transit conditions can be ensured.
Although the reopening represents an important step toward restoring normal operations, full normalization is expected to take a couple of weeks, as there are currently more than 3,000 trucks waiting to cross the border. The authorities will therefore prioritize the gradual clearance of the accumulated backlog while maintaining safe transit conditions. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and keep you informed of any further developments or changes to the current operating conditions.
